Chapter Twenty-One

Not having spoken to Fab and with no clue what the plan was for the day, I dressed in my usual work outfit of skirt and top, sliding into sandals and shoving a pair of flip-flops in my bag. I was holding my phone when it beeped. “Meet me outside” was the text I got. I went outside and slid into the passenger seat.

“Your husband is annoying.” Fab rocketed down the street.

“Don’t expect me to apologize for the delay, since I was about to get lucky.”

Fab’s eyebrows shot up so high, they almost disappeared into her hairline. “La, la, la, I don’t want to hear that, and besides, you sound like you’re sixteen.”

“You ought to be thanking him for reversing my earlier ’tudiness. I’m thinking a caramel latte will be just the jack I need for the rest of the day. If we’re headed to a shootout, make sure you order me the ginormous size.”

“We’re meeting Gunz. He says discretion is of the utmost importance in this next case.”

I groaned. “After we’re done with his highness, I need to hit The Cottages. The mental patients have been quiet of late, and I need to check to make sure my property is still standing.”

“Really, Madison. They’re folks, just like you and… not me, but other people. You could be a little nicer.”

“Coffee,” I bellowed and turned toward the window, smiling at my reflection and how much fun it was to annoy Fab some days. “I got a call on the trouble hotline this morning…” I related the conversation with Cootie. “You should be proud, when he thought butt-kicker, your name topped his list.”

Fab sped through the coffee drive-thru and placed our order, remembering the extra whipped cream. Then raced over to the office, pulling through the gate and parking next to Gunz’s SUV.

“Gunz better not be attempting to lure Xander away to work for one of his other enterprises. You need to make it clear—no poaching.”

“We’re not a career choice.” Fab got out, ran up the stairs, and breezed through the open door. One would almost think she didn’t want to listen to me grumbling all the way up the steps, since she hadn’t paused to acknowledge my grievance.

I entered the office and set a cup of coffee in front of Xander, who sat at the kitchen table, absorbed in whatever was on the screen of his laptop. He glanced up and smirked.

Gunz had made himself comfortable behind Fab’s desk and was talking on his phone. At the sight of her, he cut it short. “Hello, hun.”

Looking at Xander, I rolled my eyes; he tried to hide a grin. I sat on the couch, knowing it was a good location for eavesdropping.

“You were instrumental in dealing with my cousin, and I’m happy that no one ended up dead.” Gunz winked at Fab. “Relocating the man has worked out, and he didn’t squawk, since he has no family and few friends around here anymore.”

“It’s always good to have a satisfied client,” Fab said.
